Wooster Chemistry Annual Report 2001-2002 ACTIVITIES OF THE STAFFMary Kilpatrick completed her tenth year as the technical assistant who manages the chemicals and equipment for Introductory College Chemistry I and II laboratories. She also was appointed the Laboratory Coordinator, which included assisting in these labs and supervising notebook grading. In her spare time she volunteers with Hospice, Meals on Wheels, and the Ohio Reads tutorial program. Jerry Patterson has completed three years as the Chemical Stockroom Manager and continues to "fine-tune" the operation and inventory in the Stockroom. He again assisted in the B-WISER and Flinn Scientific workshops during the summer of 2002. Jerry continues to pursue tennis and participated in a regional tennis league. However, his team did not make it to the state championship this year. Jerry's son Kyle is picking-up the family tennis tradition and has won some trophies from several Northeastern Ohio tournaments. Jerry and his wife Sarah are still active in clowning. So look for "GIRAFFIE" and "RAINBOW" at events in Wooster and the surrounding areas. Diane Rossey completed her 23rd year at the College on September 1, 2001. The 2001-02 academic year was the last year she helped with PSI announcements and posters. Diane helped Paul Edmiston to create an exhibit in the Timken Science Library that explained how Wooster students have used analytical chemistry techniques to solve a simulated murder mystery, "Ohio Crime Solvers." Diane's "crafty talents" were featured in an article in the November issue of C.O.W. Talk. She presented a talk as part of the Noontime Knowledge Lunch-Hour Series sponsored by the Hourly Support Staff Committee. She shared recipes and craft ideas--"Getting Ready for the Holidays." Due to a knee injury that resulted in surgery in August, Diane had to resign from the Front Desk Clerk position at The Wooster Inn. Patrice Smith, part-time secretary in the department, competed in San Francisco Bay in the 2002 Alcatraz Challenge, swimming from Alcatraz Island to Crissy Field in San Francisco. She placed first in the Women's Masters Division! She also placed first in the Paul Bunyan Half Ironman competition in Oscoda, MI. This required a 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike ride, and 13.1-mile run. Patrice also volunteered for her son's lacrosse program and for the Wooster YMCA (teaching water aerobics and swimming). She was a member of the Masters Swim Club of Wooster. Patrice spends as much time as possible with her husband and sons in their cottage in Charlevoix, MI. |
