Bowlers dictate terms Wooster Cricket Club vs. Cleveland Cricket Club, Fall 2002
CCC 109 beat WCC 80.
The last match of the season saw the team travel to Cuyahoga Falls to take on the Cleveland Cricket Club. Though WCC ended up on the losing side, it was a match in which the team's bowlers came in for much praise from the CCC captain. Taking the new ball on a hard cement wicket on a damp and chilly morning, fast bowlers Imran Hasnain and Mohammed Chattha bowled extremely well to restrict the free-stroking CCC top order. Chattha bowled especially well, giving just 2 runs in his first three overs and taking two wickets.
Left-arm spinner Mustafa Rafique and medium pacer Sajal Sthapit backed their leading pair by bowling a very tight line and beating the bat on several occasions. Some exceptional fielding along with some rash strokeplay saw CCC bowled out for just 109. Sajal, bowling a very tidy spell, finished with 4 wickets, while Mustafa snared three victims with his containing spin bowling.
However, things did not go so well for the WCC batsmen, with Mustafa, skipper Jamie Alter, and Jamal Haider all falling early. Zoheb Veljee, WCC's stand out batsmen over the past three seasons, fell to a good catch in the slips, and from there on the runs began to dry up as the CCC bowlers maintained a strict line. Vice-captain Imran and Chattha, batting in the middle order for the first time, tried their best to keep the scoreboard ticking, but Imran's dismissal saw a complete collapse by the lower order. Chattha remained unbeaten on 22, the highest score of the WCC innings.
Though the team lost, the players were upbeat about the season gone by, taking with them some good memories of individual and team performances. The team now looks forward to the spring, where a possible chance to compete in the Mid-West Championship beckons.
