Wooster steamrolls Wittenberg Wooster Cricket Club vs. Wittenberg University, Spring 2001
WCC 163/4 beat Wittenberg 82 all-out.
The Wooster Cricket Club closed off its rather uneventful 2001/02 season with victory against Wittenberg University at Wooster's own Douglass Quad. The win came at a time when the team needed to come good with a disciplined performance. Put in to bat first, Wooster scored 165 for the loss of just four wickets, thanks mainly to a solid batting performance by opener Karan Gonsalves and Umair Ahmed. Gonsalves, playing his first game for the club, remained unbeaten on 70 whilst playing an innings of determination. Mixing caution with aggression, Gonsalves displayed his batting abilities fluently, timing the ball well and judging the field to perfection. He was ably supported by Umair, who scored a quick fire 44, including three powerful sixes. The two forged a strong partnership after a few wickets had fallen in succession. What stood out in their partnership was their ability to take the quick singles and clear the infield with ease.
When defending their total, the Wooster new ball bowlers bowled with aggression and control, setting the Wittenberg batsmen on the defensive. Imran Hasnain accounted for two batsmen with some controlled swing bowling, while Zarrar Said backed him up with some quick bowling. The main wicket taker though was left-arm spinner Mustafa Rafique. He kept a tight and attacking line, and got three wickets in reward when the Wittenberg batsmen erred in judgment and played some rash strokes. Sajal Sthapit, Umair and Jamie Alter cleaned up Wittenberg's remaining batsmen with some further attacking bowling. Sthapit even struck the opposition's best batsman with successive deliveries to the arm and chest, forcing the batsman to leave the field.
It was a well-fought match by the home side and reflects well on their spirit and dedication to cricket.
