Rafique's hundred in vain as Wittenberg seize victory at home

Wooster Cricket Club vs. Wittenberg University, Fall 2002
WCC 266/4 lost to Wittenberg 267/4

There was much hype surrounding this match, as for the majority of the team it was their first "away" game. Add to this the fact that it was a day-night encounter, to be played under floodlights, and the team was pumped. The team traveled to Wittenberg full of enthusiasm and riding high on its recent victory against the same team. Winning the toss and electing to bat on a hard Astroturf wicket that would suit the batsmen, WCC got off to a bad start, losing opener Imran Hasnain early on. Mustafa Rafique, promoted to one-down, began solidly, getting his eye in by judging the pace of the ball and nature of the wicket. Together with Mohammed Chattha, Rafique began to accumulate runs at a decent pace.

Chattha's dismissal brought to the crease the trusted Zoheb Veljee, and from then on it was a run spree. Zoheb and Mustafa defined all the Wittenberg bowlers, scoring runs at will and hitting the ball to all parts of the football stadium. Once Mustafa reached his maiden half-century, the scoring quickened and a succession of fours and sixes followed, taking Mustafa to a well-deserved hundred. Zoheb played his part to perfection in a stand of 180 with Mustafa, contributing a priceless 74. WCC ended up on 266 for the loss of just four wickets.

In defending their total under lights, the bowlers found it difficult to contain Wittenberg's opener and captain, Karan Malik, who was severely harsh on anything down the leg side. Malik too raced to a fine half-century, scoring at more than run-a-ball. Mustafa struck first, trapping the other opener leg before wicket, but this did not seem to trouble Malik. Joined by another fine batsman, Chinthika Jayawardene, he kept the scoreboard ticking and frustrated the WCC bowlers.

Captain Jamie Alter struck immediately after the drinks break, bowling Chinthika around the legs, and then Zoheb brought off an amazing left-handed catch at the boundary to dismiss Malik for 89. The successful wickettaker was Sajal Sthapit, who had bowled a fine spell throughout. This brilliant effort from Zoheb instilled some much-needed confidence in the team, but unfortunately the run rate had dipped to low for the bowlers to make another comeback, and eventually Wittenberg knocked off the required runs with two overs to spare.

The game was a real cracker and WCC had some good moments in the field. Most of all, the match was memorable for Mustafa's maiden century and his partnership with Zoheb, who proved once again that he was the team's most reliable batsman.
