Inspired spin bowling and fielding triggers an incredible collapse Wooster Cricket Club vs. Wittenberg University, Fall 2002
Wittenberg 185 lost to WCC 186/1.
Returning to Wittenberg a second time, Wooster looked a far better unit as it comprehensively beat the home team by 9 wickets. Putting Wittenberg in to bat, Wooster could initially only watch as the openers got off to a flier, scoring at more than 9 an over. Again, their captain Karan Malik was the main scorer. But with the introduction of spin in the10th over, the Wittenberg batsmen suddenly found the going a lot tougher. 150/2 soon became 185 all -out as the home side quickly succumbed to some disciplined spin bowling and rejuvenated fielding.
Following a terrific direct-hit run-out by Hussain Bandukwala that saw Wittenberg lose their most stable batsman, spinners Jamie Alter, Mustafa Rafique, and Jamal Haider bowled a tight line to seize the remaining wickets. With the captain himself taking 3, Mustafa 3 and Jamal 1, Wooster effectively bowled out the opposition in quick time. The Wittenberg innings ended as it had begun, with their batsman still playing their aggressive shots, the difference being that after the first wicket fell all their shots found eagerly waiting fielders. A case in point was Sajal Sthapit's amazing diving catch at square leg that sent the last batsman back to the pavilion.
Batting under lights for the first time, the Wooster batsmen found little difficulty in knocking off the required runs. Mustafa followed up his century in the previous match by hitting an unbeaten 90 and sharing in a match-winning stand of 149 with Zoheb Veljee, who played his part very well, contributing a valuable 40 not-out. Earlier, Zoheb had plaid a key role in the field, affecting 4 dismissals behind the stumps.
