"An Investigation of Calibration-Free Augmented Reality"

Abstract
K. Kutulakos and J. Vallino present in, "Affine Object Representations for Calibration-Free Augmented Reality", a technique to place 3D virtual objects into a user's environment.
The difficulties to be addressed are:
- How to establish a relationship between physical and virtual objects
- How to render the virtual object as the environment and camera viewpoints change over time
Both of which require the ability to describe the camera's motion, the user's environment and the embedded virtual objects in the same frame of reference. This study investigates the mathematical principles used by Kutulakos and Vallino, namely, affine and projection spaces and calibration-free augmented reality. A simplified application to merge a virtual object within a video clip is implemented using 3ds Max 5.
