Senior Independent Study

My Senior IS deals with Human-Computer Interaction in a 3D environment. It is written in an XML-based, 3D graphic format known as X3D. The project is a virtual-tour of Taylor Hall, an academic building on the campus of The College of Wooster that contains the Computer Science, Mathematics, and Physics departments.

In this virtual tour the user is able to navigate through actual rooms in Taylor Hall that have been modeled in 3D. To move from room to room the user simply clicks on a door to enter the next room. There are also items within the room that can be clicked on. (As yet the only room is the Computer Science Lab, there are no other rooms or click-able items in the lab).

The program can only be viewed using X3D-specific viewers. These will either be plug-ins for current web browsers or they will be standalone applications or both. Here is a list of some X3D viewers:

  • Octaga (Windows Internet Explorer/Linux)
  • Flux (Windows XP/2000/ME/98. Internet Explorer/Netscape/Mozilla)
  • Cortona (Mac OS X. Internet Explorer/iCab/Mozilla/OmniWeb/Opera)
  • Cortona (Mac. Internet Explorer/Netscape)
