Current Employee Profile

Alan Chewning

Alan Chewning,
Assistant Director of Development for Young Alumni

How would you describe what you do?
I am a professional beggar.  I am responsible for educating young alumni about philanthropy and giving back to Wooster.  It's a weird job in that the results of my work won't be felt or seen for a few decades.  I also work with the Senior Class.  This is my favorite part of the job as I enjoy students and how bright and creative that they are.

Length of service at the College:
Since January of 2006

Where did you work before coming to the College?
The Kessler Group in Boston doing financial marketing.  It was a great job and I loved living in Boston.

First Job:
Mowing lawns when I was 8. My neighbor had the steepest backyard in the world.  It's a wonder that I still have all of my limbs.

Educational Background:
Graduated from Wooster in 2003. I visited Wooster as a courtesy to my Dad, who was good friend with Jeff Todd. The rest is history.

Family members:
Parents and a younger brother and sister (twins).  My father and my sister are also working in higher education. I can't seem to escape!

Favorite things outside of work:
Cooking and traveling.  When I travel, I prefer to spend my time off the beaten path and go places most tourists and visitors don't know about.

Favorite movie:
Animal House and Field of Dreams.

Favorite music (e.g., band, genre):
I listen to it, but I couldn't nail down a favorite.  I'd have to put The Eels, Colin Hay, Kenna, and Dispatch towards the top of the list.

Complete this sentence: "People are surprised to learn that I have lasted in Wooster this long!  (kidding)  People are surprised to learn that I have been working with all women since I have graduated and have managed to keep my sanity.

What three words best describe you?
Creative, unconventional and funny.
