Department of English

As part of a College-wide curricular review, the English Department is now conducting a self-study of our major. As we reflect on the work of our department, we have several questions that you, our soon-to-graduate seniors, are best suited to answer. During the next several days (until Friday, April 27) we would appreciate your response to any or all of the questions below.

Of course, all responses will be anonymous. Thank you in advance for your reflections. We are looking for constructive input about your education here at the College, and we’ll appreciate any information you can give us.

1. Why did you decide to become an English major?

2. Have your experiences in the English Department helped you to grow as a reader of literary and other texts. If so, in what ways?

3. Have your experiences in the English Department helped you to grow as a writer? Has your writing experience helped you to think through the complexities of the discipline?

4. Are there any areas in the English Department curriculum that you feel should receive more emphasis (or less)?

5. Did you feel there was a logic to the required “sequence” courses in the major? Did Language, Literature and Culture prepare you for Writers as Readers? Writers as Readers for Junior Independent Study? Junior Independent Study for Senior Independent Study?

6. What has been the most or least valuable about your Junior and Senior I.S. experiences?

7. Are you considering graduate studies? If so, what course of study are you considering?

8. Are you thinking about possible careers at this point? If so, what career paths are you considering?

9. What has been most and least valuable about your experiences in the English Department?

Please feel free to make any comments that might not be covered by the above questions. The more information we receive, the more effective our study will be, so please share as much as you want. We appreciate your time and effort as we try to improve our contributions to future learners within our discipline.
