Was an invited speaker at the American Psychological Association 2006 conference, where she spoke about "How and why people care for nature." Also gave presentations at the Cleveland Zoo, Oberlin College, and the Society for Human Ecology Conference in Bar Harbor, ME.

EDITORIAL BOARDS:

Was named to the editorial boards of the Journal of Social Issues and Environmental Communication, while continuing on the boards of Human Ecology Review and the Journal of Environmental Psychology.

Organized "Expanding Your Horizons" workshop for sixth grade girls in which women in science and technical fields provided hands-on interactive sessions for girls. April 28, 2007.

DONALD T. JACOBS (VICTOR J. ANDREW PROFESSOR OF PHYSICS)

PUBLICATIONS:

Article "Universality in 8-Arm Star Polystyrene and Methylcyclohexane Mixtures Near the Critical Point" to be published in the Journal of Chemical Physics. Investigation using two independent experimental approaches on several molecular mass samples of a star polystyrene in the solvent methylcyclohexane at low concentrations. Four years of research funded by the Petroleum Research Fund and NSF-REU grant. Student co-authors: Clinton Braganza, Andy Brinck, Mark Lightfoot, Christopher Locke, Sarah Suddendorf, Henry Timmers, Angela Triplett, Nithya Venkataraman, and Mark Wellons from Wooster, and Adam Cohen from Bucknell.

"Heat Capacity of the Liquid-Liquid Mixture Nitrobenzene and Dodecane Near the Critical Point" co-authored by Nathan Utt '07 and colleague Susan Lehman. Being published in the Journal of Chemical Physics. Reports research into the thermodynamic behavior of an n-alkane of a particular chain length. Compares results to other measurements with a different number of carbon atoms. Discusses discrepancy in the literature and suggests a resolution. Supported by the Petroleum Research Fund and NSF-REU grant.

GRANTS:

Co-PI on a successful NSF-MRI equipment grant for an Isothermal Titration Calorimeter with Paul Bonvallet and Mark Snider in the Chemistry Department.

KENT KILLE (ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR OF POLITICAL SCIENCE)

PUBLICATION:

Editor of The UN Secretary General and Moral Authority: Ethics and Religion in International Leadership. Washington, DC: Georgetown University Press, 2007. In the volume authored the Introduction, Chapter 1 "Moral Authority and the UN Secretary General's Ethical Framework," and Chapter 10 "The Secular Pope: Insights on the UN Secretary General and Moral Authority".

In The UN Secretary General and Moral Authority, contributors provide case studies of all seven former secretaries general, establishing a much needed comparative survey of each office holder's personal religious and moral values. From Trygve Lie's forbearance during the UN's turbulent formative years to the Nobel committee's awarding Kofi Annan and the United Nations the prize for peace in 2001, the case studies all follow the same format, first detailing the environmental and experiential factors that forged these men's ethical frameworks, then analyzing how their "inner code" engaged with the duties of office and the global events particular to their terms.

MARILYN D. LOVELESS (HORACE N. MATEER PROFESSOR OF BIOLOGY)

PUBLICATIONS:

Co-author on modeling study to be published in the journal Forest Ecology and Management. Examines the ecological and genetic consequences of current logging practices (in the Amazon) and concludes that the frequency and intensity of logging, as currently practiced, is unsustainable. Makes recommendations for policy changes to reduce the ecological and genetic impacts of timber extraction.

PRESENTATIONS:

Presented the aforementioned modeling study on logging practices at the annual meeting of the Association for Tropical Biology and Conservation in Morelia, Mexico, in late July.

OTHER:

Continues to serve as a member of the Editorial Board for Silvae Genetica, an international journal of forestry and forest management.

ROBERT R. SANDS (VISITING ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF ANTHROPOLOGY/ARCHAEOLOGY)

PUBLICATIONS:

"Ethical Ethnography: Epistemology and the Ethics of Good Intentions" will appear in the forthcoming volume (2007), Tribal Play: Sport Subcultures and Countercultures, Michael Atkinson and Kevin Young (eds), Elsevier Press.

APPLIED EXPERIENCE:

2007 concluded the final year of filling the position of environmental manager for the environmental support contractor at Edwards AFB. Managed one of the top environmental programs in the DoD which married environmental stewardship and mission support for the premier research, development and testing facility in the nation. Utilizing a staff of 90 and an annual budget of $10 million, led a state of the art program that included cultural and natural resources, environmental quality and restoration, an award winning community relations program, and a cutting edge GIS program. In 2006 and 2007, also worked to establish relationships with local primary/secondary schools to advance environmental awareness, as well as with regional colleges and universities to provide environmental opportunities for internships and first-time employment following graduation.

Completed training at the Center for Digital Storytelling in Berkeley, CA, with hopes of providing a digital storytelling workshop for elementary-aged children during the summer of 2008.
