I.  COURSE OBJECTIVES

  • Students will become knowledgeable about cultural, linguistic, and ethnic diversity in the classroom.
  • Students will become aware of the latest educational developments in their content area.
  • Students will understand assessment tools for their particular area.
  • Students will become familiar with Progress Book and other current technology software.
  • Students will be able to draw from their content areas and construct engaging, age-appropriate lessons.
  • Students will be able to construct curriculum units that draw from new and time-tested pedagogical concepts from the area of content area reading
  • Students will become aware of educational research on issues related to pedagogical methodology.
  • Students will teach students to be able to use context to identify and define unfamiliar words.
  • Students will be able to employ effective techniques and strategies for the for the ongoing development of vocabulary acquisition
  • Students will be able to monitor their own word identification through the use of syntax, semantic and graphophonem relations.

II.  RESOURCES

  • Each student will be required to read selected books throughout the semester. A date will be set in the syllabus with relevant information regarding the discussion of these books.
  • Ohio Department of Education Standards’ Guides. A copy of the standards guide for Language Arts will be provided at no cost to the student. The standards are also available online at the Ohio Department of Education at www.ode.state.oh.us.
  • National Council of Teachers of English subscription. English Journal

IV. COURSE EXPECTATIONS

  • You are expected to abide by the Code of Academic Integrity as published in Scot’s Key
  • You are expected to attend all scheduled classes. If you cannot attend for some reason please notify me via email. Missed classes could have a negative impact on your final grade.
  • You are expected to be on time to class.
  • Assignments must be handed in on the date they are due double spaced, typed, using no larger than 12 point font in APA 5th edition format.
  • You are expected to participate in class discussions, as part of your final grade will be based on class participation.

Grades are based on the following scale

A = 94-100% B-= 80-83% D = 60-69%
A-= 90-93% C+= 77-79% F = 60% or lower
B+= 87-89% C = 74-76%
B = 84-86% C-= 70-73%
