Alison Schmidt

Alison H. Schmidt is an associate professor of education and chair of the department at The College of Wooster, where she has been a member of the faculty since 1989.

An expert in reading and early literacy of children in early childhood settings, as well as writing development during the early school years, Schmidt received her B.A. from Wooster (1975) and her M.A. from Ashland University (1992). She currently a doctoral student at Kent State University, where she is completing a Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction with a specialty in early literacy.

A member of the International Reading Association, the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, the National Association for the Education of Young Children, and the Ohio Association of Private Colleges of Teacher Education, Schmidt has taught such classes as Elementary Language Arts and Curriculum, Elementary Social Studies and Science, Student Teaching, and Intervention in Reading. She also teaches reading and literacy courses.

Schmidt has made a number of presentations on issues in education, including Tips for Tutors/Improving Study Skills, Training Tomorrow’s Teachers, Using Literature with the Jason Project, and Quick and Easy Science Experiments.


Megan Wereley

Megan Wereley is an assistant professor in the department of education at The College of Wooster, where she joined the faculty in 2002. Her professional background includes the teaching and assessment of literacy in early childhood and elementary education. Her specific interests are in the areas of urban education, social stratification, educational policy, and the use of technology with young children. 

Wereley earned her B.A. in sociology from The College of Wooster (1994). She received both her M.A. (1996) and Ed.D. (2006) at Teachers College, Columbia University.        

Wereley is a member of the National Association for the Education of Young Children (and is president of the local NAEYC affiliate), the Association of Teacher Educators, and the International Reading Association.


Donald Drouhard

Donald Drouhard - Visiting Associate Professor of Education & Field Director

B.S. Kent State 1963; M.A. Akron University 1968.

Donald Drouhard is a visiting associate professor of education at The College of Wooster, a position he has held since 1993. In the fall of 2006, he accepted the position of Director of Student Teaching and Field for the Department of Education. During his tenure at Wooster, he has shared his educational background and experience with students majoring in education.

Drouhard received his B.S. from Kent State University (1963) and his M.A. from the University of Akron (1968). He has done additional graduate work at Ashland University, and has served as an educational consultant for Tri-County ESC.

Before joining the Wooster faculty, Drouhard was an elementary teacher in the Triway District and Wooster City School District. During his 30-year tenure at Wooster City, 16 were spent as a prinicpal in four elementary schools — Grant, Kean, Melrose and Layton — where he was instrumental in initiating several new programs.

A member of the Ohio Association of Elementary School Principals, the Wayne-Holmes Association of Elementary School Administrators, the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, the National Association of Elementary School Principals, and the Wooster Education Association, Drouhard received several honors in the field of education, including Outstanding Young Educator and The Best Principal Award. He also served as president of the Wayne County Retired Teachers Association.  


Matthew Broda

Matthew Broda - Assistant Professor in Education

Matthew W. Broda is an assistant professor of education at The College of Wooster, where he joined the faculty in 2007. As an expert in adolescent and young adult education, teacher leadership, experiential and adventure education, and professional development, Broda received his B.S. Elementary Education from Kent State University (1999) before earning his M.Ed. (2004) in Educational Administration from Ashland University and his Ph.D. (2007) in Curriculum and Instruction from Kent State University.

Prior to Wooster, Broda's professional background included serving as curriculum and instruction specialist (2002-04) and middle school educator (1999-2002). As a member of the Association for Experiential Education, National Middle School Association, Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, and the American Education Research Association he has written and presented on numerous topics in his fields of expertise including dramaturgical methodology in experiential education, teacher leadership, block scheduling, the intersection of the critical and the carnivale in science education, and differentiated instruction.

Carol Bucher

Carol Bucher - Adjunct Professor of Education

An adjunct faculty member, Carol Bucher is a former elementary classroom teacher and Gifted Program Coordinator.
