Box Score

WOOSTER, Ohio – Brittany Montgomery was the difference maker in another postseason game, this time scoring the game’s lone goal which propelled The College of Wooster field hockey team to a 1-0 victory over Ohio Wesleyan University on Saturday, helping it claim its second-consecutive North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament championship.

The Fighting Scots (16-5) came out shooting behind Amanda Artman, who almost scored on two occasions in the opening period, including a blast in which she spun around a defender and maintained possession of the ball, but the goalkeeper made an impressive play to knock away the would be goal. With less than two minutes remaining prior to the break, Artman again got loose on a breakaway, this time sending a cross over to Montgomery who was camped out behind the keeper, and the latter one-touched what became the game-winning score.

Montgomery has had an impressive week, as she scored a goal and added an assist in Wooster’s 4-2 win over Denison in the semifinal game on Wednesday. She has scored five goals over her last three games and now ranks third on the team with 25 points.

Wooster outshot Ohio Wesleyan 9-3 in the game, and produced a 7-1 advantage in corner attempts, but the Bishops withstood the Scots attack withholding Montgomery’s goal. On the offensive end, Ohio Wesleyan was unable to get into a rhythm thanks in large part to Stephanie Standera, who controlled the midfield and rarely allowed the Bishops to get into scoring position. Standera was named the tournament’s MVP, and Montgomery, Kate Valora, and Katrina Wojciechowski joined her on the all-tournament team.

With the win the Scots earned an automatic berth into the NCAA Div. III Tournament. The national field is expected to be announced Sunday night and opening-round play will begin Wednesday.
