The English Department produces publications in many of its classes. The "Journalism" and "Magazine Writing" classes always produce major publications, including "four-color glossy" productions, such as 1189 featured to the left, which are distributed and sold on campus. Sections of "Introduction to Composition" have produced magazines as have some of our literature and other writing classes. A variety of other options for young writers exist as well. The Office of Public Information hires students to produce news releases that appear in local areaewspapers, in the home town newspapers of students at the College, and in various campus publications. A recent graduate, Lauren Cohen, practiced her writing skills in this office and then, in her junior year, became editor of the campus newspaper, The Voice. Wooster, The College's quarterly alumni magazine, frequently features the prose work of Wooster students. Meher D'Mello, class of 1996, contributed an article on the experiences of her fellow international students to the Summer 1994 issue. Jamie Mapes, class of 1999, wrote and edited numerous articles for the magazine, including one on summer internships. Other students have reported on study abroad programs, the rewards of college-sponsored internships, and student employment on the Wooster campus. Artful Dodge, offers students paid editorial apprenticeships , evaluating literary manuscripts, performing managerial duties, and designing the magazine. The Voice, the College's solely student-run weekly newspaper, provides many opportunities for students interested in news, feature, opinion, and sports writing, as well as copy editing, layout and design, and advertising sales experience. Year One, a journal of literary and visual arts by first-year students, is produced annually and pays each contributor. Its staff is composed of sophomores, juniors, and seniors, and it's edited by the Writing Center Intern. The Writing Center offers tudents who are generally confident of their own academic writing skills the opportunity work as peer tutors. Peer tutors assist Wooster students with a wide variety of writing assignments in many disciplines. Peer tutors often report that the quality of their own writing improves significantly as they learn to identify strengths and weaknesses in the writing of others. The Writing Center also offers a one-year paid internship to a recent Wooster graduate. The Index is the College's yearbook, written and edited by a student staff. Students on yearbook staff gain valuable experience with layout and design, photography, and management skills.
