| Independent Study is a three-course sequence in the English Department.
A Guide to Independent Study In The English Department English 401: a Junior seminar entitled "Perspectives and Methods of Independent Study," designed to help students understand contemporary approaches to the study of language, texts and culture, and gain familiarity with pertinent bibliographies, periodicals, and other sources. The course emphasizes the choice and development of the students' own critical stances through a writing projects designed to help them clarify their own goals and assumptions. In most cases,, although students who attend the Newberry Program in Chicago may be able, with the permission of the Department chair, to do their Jr. I.S. work off campus. English 451, 452: In this two-course senior experience, students define their projects with the help of an advisor who meets weekly with each student during the course of the project. Projects range widely, reflecting the diversity and creative imagination of the department's students and faculty, and include:
