Frequently Asked Questions About Recycling

What can be recycled on campus?

  • Office paper, glossy magazines and catalogs, newspaper, phone books, corrugated cardboard, chipboard (cereal boxes and six pack containers), aluminum cans, food cans, plastic bottles (#1 and #2 only), and glass bottles can all be recycled.

Where can I recycle stuff on campus?

  • In most cases recyclable material can be mixed and put into the blue trash baskets, large blue recycling bins, trash cans on the campus grounds, dumpsters with the RECYCLE label, or the Wayne County Solid Waste District (WCSWD) dumpsters behind Kennedy Apartments. If your building has separate large blue bins for different materials, please use them as marked. Glass must go into the WCSWD dumpsters.
  • See our recycling poster for details!

What happens to stuff I put in the big Landmark trash dumpster?

  • Anything (recyclable or not) that goes into the Landmark trash dumpster is taken to the county landfill.

What happens to stuff I put in dumpsters with RECYCLE label?

  • Anything put in these bins goes to the Medina recycling facility where recyclable materials are separated from trash.

Do I have to sort my recyclables?

  • Material going into blue recycling trash baskets, the trash cans on the campus grounds, or the dumpsters with the RECYCLE label does not need to be sorted. Material going into the large blue recycling bins and the WCSWD dumpsters do need to be sorted according to the labels on the containers.

My office is in Kauke and it only has a blue trash basket labeled "white paper only." What do I do with other recyclables and trash?

  • You can put mixed recyclables and trash into the blue basket. Custodians empty these into the dumpsters with the RECYCLE label.

What can I do with clothes and the mini-fridge and old couch that I can't take home with me after graduation?

  • There will be donation boxes provided by Goodwill Industries in every residence hall where you can put clothes and smaller items. Larger items can be placed near the donation boxes. We hope to get a Goodwill truck on campus near the end of the school year to pick up larger items.
