Overview of Aid at Wooster

Merit scholarship programs and need-based financial aid help make Wooster affordable to many families who otherwise might not be able to provide their children the educational benefits of a selective private college. Students are admitted without regard to financial need and we offer all the aid we can to every eligible applicant. Over 95 percent of Wooster students receive financial assistance. Most of this aid comes in the form of merit scholarships (over $19 million) and need-based grants (over $6 million), offered to students without repayment obligation. Student loans (over $5 million) and campus employment opportunities (over $1 million) are the other major forms of financial aid at Wooster.

The average aid award to all students in 2007-2008 is $20,465; the average grant is $17,850. The table below suggests how aid to entering first-year students who are U.S. citizens - including merit scholarships, need-based grants and student loans, and campus employment - is distributed by family income (according to FAFSA data). Not every student receives the average award, but almost certainly the aid we offer you would fall within the appropriate range, if you apply for need-based aid:

Timely Tips

For many prospective students, obtaining an early estimate of the family's fair share of college costs--the 'Expected Family Contribution' (EFC) calculated by the FAFSA--can be an important planning tool. This can be done simply and quickly through an EFC 'estimator' at finaid.org, but the result is at best a rough approximation of the actual FAFSA calculation. More detailed calculators take more time and require you to provide more information, but their results can be exact equivalents of the FAFSA calculation. Visit the finaid.org EFC calculator or the College Board EFC calculator for examples. This fall the US Dept of Education released its own EFC calculator, online at the FAFSA 4Caster website.. To estimate your eligibility for need-based financial aid at Wooster, subtract your estimated EFC from $42,000 our estimate of total educational costs for 2008-2009 at Wooster. Learn more about need-based aid at our need-based aid page.

Once an aid award has been offered to a prospective student, we do not routinely revise the award in response to a FAFSA correction until the family submits copies of federal income tax returns and other items requested for our review.

Continuing students are reminded to submit their FAFSAs and institutional aid applications before the end of the academic year.
