These echinoids are Strongylocentrotus purpuratus on a limestone exposed along the northern seashore of California. They scrape the underlying rock with their "teeth" (Aristotle's Lanterns) to extract organic material (usually endolithic algae and bacteria), significantly eroding the rock over time.
