B.A. Colby College 2002; Ph.D. Virginia Tech 2007. Primary research interests are in petrology, volcanology, and fluids in the Earth. Current research focuses on understanding volcanic activity in the Naples, Italy, area through the use of melt inclusions. Other topics of interest include partitioning behavior, Raman spectroscopy of fluid and melt inclusions, and porphyry copper deposits.

Primary research focus is the effects of climate change on alpine environments, especially glaciers and treelines. He has worked in remote areas in the Coast Mountains, BC, Canada, the St. Elias Mountains, YT, Canada, the Cascade Mountains, WA, USA, and the southernmost Patagonian Andes, Chile for the past 8 years. He has also worked as staff geologist on the M/V Polar Star along the westcoast of South America, in Antarctica, and in northern Europe.

Studies the evolution and paleoecology of encrusting and bioeroding invertebrates, as well as the origin and diagenesis of carbonate rocks (especially hardgrounds), calcite sea dynamics, and Pleistocene sealevel change. Recently published an article on a Devonian predator/prey system in Geology.
