Field Trips

Don't Forget Your Brunton!!

Trip 1. On-Campus Field Trip (16 Sept.)

We will be taking a 1/2 day "field" trip on Sunday, 16 Sept. the beautiful sandstone exposures at the southwest corner of Kauke Hall on the Wooster campus. Before this trip be sure to check out a Brunton compass from Patrice Reeder in the Departmental Office...check it out for both this trip and the later trip to Pennsylvania. During the trip we will be getting used to using a Brunton compass to measure the orientations of structural features. Other things to bring are a clip board, mechanical pencil, and ruler/protractor (see Required Materials, Texts, etc.). We will meet in front of Scovel (Geology Dept.) at 9 am.

Trip 2. Valley & Ridge Field Trip

We will also be taking one extended field trip this year to look at the interplay between tectonics and sedimentation in the Valley & Ridge Province of the Appalachian Mtns. in Pennsylvania. You will be provided with a guidebook, but need to bring several items along yourself (see below). The field trip will require your presence during the entire days of 19, 20, and 21 October, 2007. This trip is required for successful completion of this class. Inform the professors in your other classes or sports coaches early in the semester about this trip. There is no possible makeup for this trip. If you cannot possibly make it, you will have to take the class some other year. Let me know if you are having problems arranging your absence during this time period.

For both trips, you must fill out, sign (& witnessed), and turn in a Departmental field trip Liability Release form (e.g. 1 for each trip). This is available as a PDF file here:
