WEB Exercises #2: Volcanic Eruptions & Hazards

Goal: This exercise is designed to get you familiar with accessing current information from several of the United States most volcanically active regions. You will "visit" an active volcanic area (Long Valley caldera) in California which is situated near one of the largest ski centers in the U.S. This region is constantly monitored and the site gives you the latest information. The exercise also takes you to the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory where you will gain information about active shield volcanos as well as to the Cascades Volcanic Observatory to look at information about stratovolcanos in the Pacific Northwest.

What to Do: Download the WEB Exercise #2 PDF file and follow the instructions. You will visiting the following sites:

Long Valley Volcanic Observatory

Hawaiian Volcano Observatory

Cascades Volcanic Observatory

What to Hand In: Turn in your answers to the questions on the Exercise sheet on the date indicated in the syllabus.

WEB Exercises #3: Virtual River

Goal: This exercise is to let you review concepts covered in our discussions of stream behavior, river discharge, and flooding.

What to Do: Do the River Discharge part of the exercise. While it is interesting, the Virtual Flood exercise, takes a good deal longer and covers a lot of the same material that the River Discharge exercise does.

Now go the exercise itself at: River Discharge

What to Hand In: Once you are done, you will be able to enter your name to get a "Certificate of Completion". Print off your certificate and hand this in at class on the date shown on the Syllabus. DO NOT email the link to the certificate page, this does not work.
