Answers to Anticipated Questions About the Trips:

 What About Emergency Contacts?
Telephone numbers are provided for each of our evening accommodations above. Except for the two nights we are camping at Katherine's Landing in Arizona, the phone numbers given should reach us in the evenings. The instructor will have a cell phone active during the day and evening. Anyone needing, on an emergency basis, to reach either the instructor or a student should first contact either Amy White in the Geology Department (330-263-2380) or Dr. Lori Bettison-Varga, Chair of the Geology Department (330-263-2246).

When Are We Leaving and from where?

Gettysburg basin trip: depart 7:30 am from front of Lowry center

Basin & Range trip: varies. Each student leaves from their home and arrives in Las Vegas, NV on 15th May

 What About Meals?:

Gettysburg basin trip: lunches & breakfasts provided. Each student will be provided $5.00 toward each of two dinners which can be supplemented by the students.

Basin & Range trip: lunches & breakfasts provided. Each student will be provided $5.00 toward each dinner which can be supplemented by the students.

What Kind of Weather Can I Expect in Nevada/Arizona?

Statistically, the weather in this area is great, though warming up (as they say) in May. Although we can't predict the weather, in times past, May has seen days pushing 100°C, though this is somewhat unusual. Check out the averages for Lake Havasu City, AZ which is sort of the mid-point of our Basin & Range journey.

What about rain? It's happened, but don't count on it!

When will we get back to Wooster from the Gettysburg trip???
It is long drive from Gettysburg, PA to Wooster. We will strive to arrive so that students can eat during the normal dinner hours on campus.

What about where we are staying?
On both trips, we will stay in hotels with the exception of two nights of camping near Laughlin, Nevada. Hotel rooms will generally have one or two less beds than students, so plan on sleeping in your sleeping bags on the floor for a few nights. At Katherine's Landing on the Colorado River, we will camp-out in a facility run by the National Park Service which has showers, nearby pay phones, etc.

What Should I Plan on Bringing?

Here are the essential items;

sleeping bag, plastic ground cover & pad (optional)
pillow
towel
rain gear
(optional, but only if it does not rain; obviously more impt. for Gettysburg)
hiking boots (a must!!!)
field notebook, pencils
hand lens
day pack (or fanny pack), water bottle
brunton compass
(get from Amy White in Departmental Office. Don't wait until last moment!!!)
hat (please bring a hat!), sunglasses, sunscreen other personal effects!!!
