THE JAMES R. BAROFFIO FUND FOR GEOLOGIC RESEARCH

In November 1998, the James R. Baroffio Fund for Geologic Research was established by Dr. James R. Baroffio ('54), retired President of Chevron, Canada. This fund was established by Jim to help defray expenses for students conducting Senior Independent Study research.

This $30,000 gift was publicly announced and dedicated on November 11, 1998, with a reception in honor of and presentation given by Jim to the Department of Geology and The College of Wooster community entitled, "The Hibernia Platform."

Income from this fund will be awarded annually to Geology majors who apply to help defray expenses for analytical work (i.e., major element, trace element, isotopic and/or geochronologic studies) that is required for their Senior I.S. research. The allocation of these funds will be determined by the Chair of the Department of Geology.

The students, faculty, and staff of the Department of Geology wish to wholeheartedly thank Jim, as well as his wife Marilyn, for the extraordinary generosity they have shown. It is deeply appreciated and will benefit our students for many years to come.

NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION YOUNG INVESTIGATOR GRANT

The past year was the final year for Lori Bettison-Varga's National Science Foundation Young Investigator Grant (NSF-NYI). This grant has provided Lori and the Department an unprecedented opportunity to improve the petrology program at Wooster.

In addition to increasing hard rock field experiences for our students, we have built and equipped a modern petrology laboratory which benefits all geological subfields taught at Wooster. The National Science Foundation matched dollar-for-dollar (up to $37,500) every contribution designated to the NSF-NYI fund by alumni and friends of the College.

This past year, Calvin and Molly Fritz Miller ('69) of Nashville, Tennessee, generously donated $10,000 to this fund. Bob Hilty ('54), President of Hilty Interests, Inc. of Kerrville, Texas, donated an equally generous gift of $12,000.

These donations, plus the matching funds from the National Science Foundation, are supporting an upgrade for the department's x-ray diffractometer. They have also funded clay analysis equipment for use in class as well as Independent Study research, and have also funded computer upgrades within the department.

THE F. W. CROPP III ENDOWED FUND FOR INDEPENDENT STUDY
FIELD WORK IN GEOLOGY

Under the leadership of John C. Worley ('49), the Class of 1949 has established THE F. W. CROPP III ENDOWED FUND FOR INDEPENDENT STUDY FIELD WORK IN GEOLOGY. This fund is to honor Fred Cropp ('54) for his 34 years of service to the Department of Geology and to The College of Wooster.

The Class of 1949 established this $50,000 gift to the Department of Geology as part of their 50-year gift to The College of Wooster during Alumni Weekend 1999. It was formally announced and dedicated by John Worley ('49) at the Class of 1949 50th Reunion Dinner on June 5, 1999, which was held in Scheide Music Center. Besides 100 or so members of the Class of 1949 who were present, Mark Wilson ('78), Amy White, and Fred Cropp ('54) attended. This fund will help to defray expenses for field work done by Geology majors for their Senior Independent Study theses. The allocation of funds will be made annually by the Chair of the Department of Geology.

In the lobby of Scovel Hall hangs a new plaque commemorating this new fund. It reads:

THE F. W. CROPP III ENDOWED FUND FOR INDEPENDENT STUDY FIELD WORK IN GEOLOGY was established on June 5, 1999, by John Worley and other GEOLOGY MAJORS from the Class of 1949 as part of their 50th Anniversary gift to The College of Wooster. This fund is to honor Fred for his 34 years of service to the Department of Geology and to The College of Wooster.
