Wooster’s Environmental Analysis and Action (EAA) Program will emphasize participation, integration, and an empirical approach to problem solving in the local landscape.

General information. Student participants for the research projects will be selected on the basis of written application, which will include a narrative of intended career goals. The summer program will begin the May 25 and conclude July 13. Early research experiences will be offered to interested sophomores through Wooster’s well-established Sophomore Research Program. During the following academic year, students who chose to incorporate their work into their independent study projects will continue to work with the research team. Others may continue as sophomore research assistants or on a volunteer basis.

Summer Workshops. The summer research teams will be drawn together by an EAA sponsored workshop with an invited speaker who will connect scientific research to policy applications. Students participating in the EAA Program whose work will lead to senior independent study (I.S.) will be encouraged to include a section in their I.S. theses that specifically connects their work to local, regional or global environmental policy.

Presentation of Research Results. EAA participants’ research will be presented in Fall 2007. EAA research teams, including faculty leaders, will present their results to faculty and student groups such as: Science Round Table (a bi-weekly luncheon), our science support group (Pursuing Scientific Interests), ECOS (Environmental Concerns of Students), and our science department clubs.

Students will receive a stipend of $3200 for 8 weeks of work during the summer. Attendance at three jointly held events will be required of all participants. Housing will be provided on campus for $7/night, and $100/week will be added to student stipends to cover the cost of food. Some of the projects will involve field work. Research teams may apply for additional funds to support travel to field locations, to attend a conference, and/or to purchase supplies.

Student applications are due February 23, 2007. Please submit to Sarah Sidor, Kauke Hall 301.
