Rudbeckia fulgida—or—Black-eyed Susan

Black-eyed Susan Black-eyed Susan

Rudbeckia or Black-eyed Susan is an Herbaceous Perennial, meaning that it does not produce woody tissues and that it re-grows from the ground up every year.

The photos show examples of the cultivar ‘Goldsturm’. It is the most widely produced cultivar in the nursery trade. It is available in many if not most retail greenhouse/nurseries.

It is a compact grower (24-30”), has sturdy self supporting stems, is disease resistant and most importantly, produces large numbers of bright yellow/gold flowers from July through September.

As the photos reveal, it can make quite a show when used as a mass planting. It requires lots of sun, will increase in size quickly and produce even more blooms the second and third years.

The “Green Team” highly recommends Rudbeckia ‘Goldsturm’ for a sunny spot in your plant bed.
