Hemlock Firs

Fir

Fir

The storm that produced 70 mph winds on Saturday, March 9, produced more tree casualties. The above pictures show the storm results on the Concolor Fir at the Gault Alumni property. The Fir was 44 1/2" in diameter making it the largest Concolor Fir on the campus according to Mark Niemczyk our resident Horticulturist. The Fir was a stately tree that offered shade for the hosta garden that was tucked under it's branches. In addition to the Fir was a Buckeye Tree in the President's lawn a Hemlock and an Arborvitae that the fir landed on. The void created by the downed trees will affect the environment and aesthetics of the area. Overall we feel fortunate that the other 1500+ trees were not destroyed by such fierce winds. Had the leaves been on the deciduous trees we would have likely experienced more damage.
