The “Princeton’ American Elm is a relatively new introduction in the nursery trade. They are reproduced by vegetative propagation from a group of American Elms at Princeton University. They have proven to be tolerant of the Dutch Elm Disease pathogen. They are grown at Riveredge Farms in Atlanta GA. (www.americanelm.com)
The dual rows of “Princeton” Elms shown above were purchased in Nov. 2003 by the College of Wooster thru funding generously provided by Stanley Gault. The trees were planted in 2003 at Davey Tree Expert Co.’s tree farm just west of Wooster. They have been growing there until July 2006 when Davey tree transplanted the now 4 _” diameter trees to their new home at Kauke Hall.
There previously were two rows of stately, mature American Elms on the South side of Kauke Hall until 1964 when they succumbed to DED and were removed. Mr. Gaults’ gift will provide future students with the opportunity to experience the “cathedral like” feel of walking beneath the “green ceiling” provided by the arching branches of the vase shaped trees as they age. Someday in the future as was in the past, graduation may be held in the shade of these trees.
