Independent Study: FAQ
The full requirements of Junior I.S. are spelled out in the I.S.
Handbook. But look here for brief answers to some of the most frequently
asked questions about Junior I.S.
How long does the I.S. have to be?
Typically, the Jr. I.S. is between 25 and 40 double-spaced type-written
pages.
How do I choose an advisor?
In the first week of classes, there will be a meeting of all history
majors and faculty. Students will be asked to indicate the topic
they would like to work on for Junior I.S. The department will assign
advisors to students in light of student interest and the teaching
load of the history faculty. These assignments will be posted on
the History bulletin board in Kauke Hall. Students are always encouraged
to consult with other members of the department to seek their recommendations
and counsel.
What if I don't have a topic at this meeting
of all history majors?
Just tell us what you think you are interested in. One of the roles
of the advisor is to help students to develop a topic. That said,
it is never too soon to start thinking about what you would like
to pursue for Junior Independent Study.
When and how do I meet my advisor?
You will schedule a weekly meeting time with your advisor. These
meetings typically last thirty minutes.
Why do we have to meet every week?
An independent research project can prove a daunting task. These
meetings serve several purposes not the least of which is to make
sure that students are on track. This is also a time to allow you
to ask important research questions and discuss your work as it
progresses.
Will my Jr. I.S. advisor be my Sr. I.S.
advisor?
Not necessarily. Again, advisors are assigned at the beginning of
the year based on student interest and faculty teaching loads.
What if I want to get started over the
summer?
Always a good idea. Read Getting Started With Junior I.S. (link).
Talk to the history faculty about your interests. Read more about
your potential topic.
What are the grading criteria?
Letter grades are awarded in Junior I.S. Your grade will reflect
your advisor's evaluation of the final paper submitted, as well
as the process of research and meetings.
When is the I.S. due?
A bound final copy is due the last day of classes of the semester.
Are there any other requirements? Groundrules?
Each advisor and student will work out what the Jr. I.S final project
will entail.
