Glossary of Terms

Active- a member of a Club/Section

Advisor- a faculty or staff member who assists and counsels a Club/Section

Alumni- a member who has graduated

Bid- a formal invitation to become a member of a Club/Section.  Bids will be issued before Thanksgiving (during Fall Semester).  Rushees may receive bids from several Clubs/Sections.

Acceptance/Rejection- a rushee's action to a accept or reject a bid offered by a Club/Section. Bid acceptance/rejection will occur after Thanksgiving break.

Brother- term used by Section member when referring to one another.

Committee on Social Organizations (CSO)- the overseer of rushing, bidding, new member education and other matter relating to Clubs/Sections. 

Greek- a collective term for members of Clubs/Sections. 

Hazing- as defined by Ohio state law, hazing is "doing any act or coercing another, including the victim, to do any act of initiation to any student or other organization that causes or creates a substantial risk of causing mental or physical harm to any person."

Inter-Greek Council (IGC)- the coordination body for activities of Clubs/Sections. Each Club/Section has two representatives on IGC, including its president.

New Member Activation- the process through which students who accepted bids are given full rights of belonging to the Clubs/Sections. This process precedes new member education. 

New Member Education- the three week period of time in the spring semester when Clubs/Sections introduce the organization and its members to the students who accepted bids and joined the Club/Section. Previously, this process was called pledging or initiation.

Club-Wooster's tern for women's social organizations.

Rush- the acquaintance period during Fall semester consisting of three rounds of social gatherings for both the rushee and the Club/Section member to become familiar with one another.

Rushee- any student who participates in rush and considers joining a Club/Section.

Rush Information Form- a formal expression of one's interest in participating in rush and required to accept a bid.  

Section- Wooster's term for men's social organizations.

Sister- a term used by Club members when referring to one another.

Social Member- a student who affiliates with a Club/Section but with limited privileges. Social members do not vote, hold office or participate in new member education.  Each Club/Section determines the extent to which social members pay dues, attend meetings and events, and wear the group's letters.
