Choosing a Program
Choosing your program is probably the most exciting aspect of the off-campus
study application process. Whether you ultimately decide to retrace the
steps of your ancestors or study psychology in Vienna, however, be
sure to look first at the College's Policies
and Procedures for Off-Campus Study.
You should also talk with your academic advisor or another faculty
member in your major department. Your advisor knows your academic plan
and how your plans fit best in your major. The questions you should ask
yourself in choosing a program might be affected by your major or minor,
so check out the Departmental
Advising for Off-Campus Study, since the plan of your major
may determine the program, semester, or year available to you to study
off-campus.
Once you have an idea of where and when you might like to
study off campus, you should turn your attention to choosing a program.
The easiest option is to choose a Wooster-run program, like Wooster
in Besançon, Wooster
in Thailand, Wooster
Summer in Siena, or Wooster
Summer in Xian, or apply through the
Lilly program for an off-campus experience. You might also want
to look at the GLCA and ACM
program offerings. The next best option is to choose a program from our
Wooster-endorsed list.
To choose an endorsed program by destination, first click on a
region in the world map to find programs in that area, and then click
on the specific destination to access the program page.
In choosing your program, you may wish to take advantage of what past
Wooster students thought of the programs by reading past Program
Evaluations (COW password protected). If you are a student
with specific concerns, such as GLBT,
multiculturalism,
women's
issues, or accessibility,
feel free to discuss these concerns with the IPO Director, or with the
contact person in the program you select.
Finally, during the fall of the academic year prior to your off-campus
study, make an appointment with the Director of the IPO (stop in
to 107 Babcock or call the student assistant at x2951). And, most importantly,
make sure your application is in by March 1 of the year preceding off-campus
study!
After all those initial steps, it could be that you're still not sure
where, or with which program you'd like to study. If you don't find anything
on the list that matches your plans, you
can always do some research and find the program that is right for you.
To search for non-endorsed programs by destination and/or field,
you may wish to explore the IIE
Passport, studyabroad.com,
International Education,International
Student, Peterson's
and UNESCO
sites. Remember, though, if you choose a program that is not on the endorsed
list, you will need to petition
to the Dean of Faculty by March 15 for Special Endorsement
of your program.
Summer study abroad students only
need to apply through the IPO if they want one of their eight semesters
of financial aid to be applied. We are happy to advise you on summer study,
however, or use one of the searchable databases on
this page. You can also take advantage of Wooster
Summer in Siena, or Wooster
Summer in Xian, and summer research opportunities such as
the JMU research experience,
or others, perhaps in preparation for your IS and funded by Copeland,
