Overseas Term
The International Relations faculty recognizes that student understanding of the complexities of the field of international relations can be greatly enhanced by exposure to people, languages and cultures different from their own. IR majors complete a term or more of overseas study from a long list of Wooster-endorsed programs. Normally, the overseas experience should be the equivalent of at least one academic semester in length. Summer programs of fewer than eight weeks will not be approved.
The International Programs Office has information on all approved overseas opportunities. The Director, Dr. Jennifer
Cushman, assists students in selecting programs and making arrangements for
such study. The College of Wooster recognizes several types of overseas opportunities:
(1) programs sponsored by the College through its membership in such organizations as The Great Lakes Colleges Association (GLCA) and the Institutes of European and Asian Studies and through GLCA cooperation with the Associated Colleges of the Midwest (ACM);
(2) programs sponsored by the College directly or by other accredited colleges. These overseas opportunities permit IR majors to travel virtually anywhere in the world, from Africa, Australia, Latin America, and China, to Germany, England, France, and Spain.
- IR major Emily Todd ('04) studied in Nicaragua, and then returned there
to do additional research for her Independent Study. She currently works as
a Jesuit volunteer in Managua. To read an interview with Emily Todd about
her experiences and her life and work in Nicaragua, click HERE
- IR major Everett Peachey ('01) joined the Peace Corps, and was posted in
Russia and Kazakhstan. To read some of Everett Peachey's dispatches from Almaty,
Kazakhstan, click HERE.
