18th & 19th Century Periodicals The CONSORT libraries together have a strong collection of 18th and 19th century American and British periodicals. These serve as wonderful primary resources for studies in history, history of science, literature, religion, women's studies, and many other disciplines. The journals may be held as digital electronic journals, in microfilm or microfiche, or in print. Indexing for the major 18th & 19th century periodical publications is available in the following electronic databases. Please consult your reference librarian for additional indexing resources available at your library.
To find out what periodicals are held in any form (digital, microfilm or microfiche, print) by the libraries, use either the JOURNAL TITLE or the TITLE search in the CONSORT library catalog. One can also search by WORD, and then limit by Other material type to JOURNALS (PRINT, ELECTRONIC, MICROFORM) and by date (e.g. After 1700 and Before 1900). Digital or Electronic Journals from the 18th & 19th centuries are included in: Microfilm or Microfiche is a common storage method for older periodicals. These are non-circulating and must be used in the owning library but individual articles may be requested through InterLibrary Loan. Print is the form in which these periodials first appeared. By using the original print issues of a journal one can observe the physical condition of the volume; see art work, advertisements or marginal notes; and read articles as they were read at the time they were published.
