Guide to Library Research in Science

Lesson 9: Finding Full Text of Journal Articles

Once you have a citation to a journal article, you need to be able to determine whether you can access the full text of the article. This lesson provides information about how you go about retrieving an article in print, electronic or microform formats.

Linking Directly from Electronic Databases

Many electronic research databases provide direct connections to articles in journals to which we have subscriptions. For example:

  • The Find It! option in the OSearch databases, e.g. MEDLINE, BIOSIS Previews, INSPEC or GeoRef, connects to the OLinks page. This page may provide access to the full text of the article in the OhioLINK Electronic Journal Center, EBSCOhost, or other full-text article databases . OLinks also provides links to the CONSORT and OhioLINK catalogs for more detailed information about holdings within the State of Ohio.
  • The EBSCOhost databases, including Academic Search Complete, Alt Health Watch, Computers and Applied Sciences Abstracts, Health Source and others, provide links to the full text of articles in HTML and/or PDF from their own database. In addition, the Find It! option links to the OLinks page with the same linking capabilities as those provided by the OSearch databases.
  • The PubMed database, produced by the National Library of Medicine and the National Center for Biotechnology Information, also provides full-text access by linking through OLinks or by linking directly to a publisher’s site.
  • SciFinder Scholar provides full-text access to electronic journals through the ChemPort gateway. In addition, ChemPort links to the OLinks page for a more complete description of statewide holdings of the journal in question.
    Important: Due to the limited access to SciFinder Scholar, the science library staff requests that, during times of heavy use, you do not use ChemPort to access full text articles. Instead, mark and download the records for the articles of interest, exit SciFinder Scholar and retrieve the articles through the Wooster eJournals and Journals page.

Please Note: The College of Wooster libraries also subscribe to electronic and print journals that are not linked from all databases. If there is no full text option in a citation record, or if you have found a citation from another source, check our holdings by searching the title from the Wooster eJournals and Journals page before requesting the article through ILLiad.

Finding Journal Titles

The College of Wooster libraries provide access to more than 35,000 electronic journals, in addition to our print and microform journal collections, through our databases, subscriptions, and aggregated collections from OhioLINK EJC, EBSCOhost, and JSTOR among others. Use the search engine on the Wooster eJournals and Journals page to:

  • search for an individual title or ISSN;
  • browse an alphabetical listing of available titles;
  • browse by subject category.

Searching by title will retrieve a listing of our holdings for that title in all available formats. Links for electronic journals will take you to a list of available issues. Select the issue you need and then select the article from the table of contents page. Links to titles held in print or microform will take you to the CONSORT catalog record for the title, which provides the physical location and call number needed to locate the volumes.

     from 03/01/1947 to 12/01/2003 in JSTOR
     from 01/01/2000 to present in OhioLINK Electronic Journal Center

Links to titles held in print will take you to the CONSORT catalog record for the title, which provides the physical location (WOO Periodicals or WOO Science Periodicals) and call number needed to locate the volumes.

If the article you need is available in microfilm or microfiche, the link will take you to the CONSORT catalog record.

Microfilm and microfiche are stored in file cabinets on Level 1 of Andrews Library. Reader/printers are available in the same area. If you have difficulty locating the film or fiche, or in using the reader/printers, ask for assistance at the Reference Desk in the Gault Library.

Browsing from the Wooster eJournals and Journals page by subject category allows you to retrieve a list of available journals in a particular subject area. For example, under the category Earth & Environmental Sciences, subcategory Geology, you can select the narrower field of Petrology and retrieve a list of eight relevant titles with holdings information and links to sources of full text, or to CONSORT catalog records.

Linking to Publishers’ or Aggregators’ Electronic Journal Sites

The OhioLINK Electronic Journal Center (EJC) is a collection of articles from more than 5600 research journals. OhioLINK loads the full text of articles from more than 70 publishers onto the EJC server, usually in PDF format, where they are  permanently archived. Some of these publishers also allow OhioLINK members direct access to their own electronic journal pages, which provide additional functionality and viewing options.

JSTOR is a searchable digital archive of important scholarly journals in many disciplines. JSTOR digitizes all available issues of selected journals from volume one up to the “moving wall” which is the time period between the last issue available in JSTOR and the most recently published issue of a journal. The moving wall is specified by publishers and usually ranges from three to five years. For most journals, an additional year is added each year, thus the “moving wall.”

Publishers’ sites may provide electronic journal articles in both PDF and HTML format. They often provide citation linking to bibliographic records in major databases, to full text of cited articles and to related articles. Most provide a search function within their own publications and some provide indexing terms to facilitate searching. Some publishers provide supplemental information that does not appear within the article. Pre-prints of articles appear on some publishers’ sites before they are completely processed and indexed and before they appear in the OhioLINK EJC. Depending upon the subscription agreement with publishers, OhioLINK members may also have access to journal archives that do not appear on EJC.

Some scholarly societies and aggregators of scholarly journals are now experimenting with various models of open access publishing of electronic journals. By using different funding models, open access providers are making available the full text of peer-reviewed articles either immediately upon publication or after a short embargo period. These open access journals may or may not appear in the CONSORT or OhioLINK catalogs.

See the following publishers’ and aggregators’ sites for services beyond those provided by the OhioLINK EJC:

Borrowing from Another Library

If the journal you need is not available at Wooster in either print, microform or electronic format, you may request your article using the ILLiad electronic request form. See Interlibrary Loan for additional information about borrowing materials from other libraries and Lesson 11: Borrowing from Other Libraries for more information about using ILLiad.
