Settling Old Scores – Conflict in Northern Ireland
For most, the subject of Northern Ireland conjures up images of civil unrest, urban terrorism and guerilla warfare. In this seminar, the social, political and economic evolution of the state of Northern Ireland since its inception in 1922, is examined with a view to elucidating the origins of the conflict that engulfed Northern Irish society from 1968-94. Beginning with the formation of the Northern Ireland Civil Right Association in the 1960’s, this seminar examines the often complex interplay between the cultural and political identities of the Unionist and Nationalist communities in Northern Ireland in shaping the evolution of society during a quarter century of violence.
Readings may include: McKittrick and McVea’s Making Sense of the Troubles, Dillon’s God and the Gun, Mallie and McKittrick’s Endgame in Ireland
