The most important thing I think I’ve
learned about myself is that I have untapped reserves of patience
that I didn’t know I had. Working with the elderly can be
slow-paced and sometimes frustrating, but working with large groups
of children can be even more so. Learning how patient I can be
with people when I need to be helps me a lot. If it seems a small
realization, I would say it is hardly. I’ve always wanted
to be a teacher and a writer, both of which take a lot of patience
and control. To learn that I can stay positive and attentive even
when it seems hopeless or frustrating is a virtue I thought I might
not possess.

Sometimes I wondered if I was really helping them
at all—how much can a game of dominoes or a few pictures
do for a person? But I came to realize that I helped those people
through changing their environment and giving them an opportunity
to interact with a different person.

It was the first time I felt like
I had my own space to think to live.
