Application Guidelines
Your Azimuth application will consist of many components, each
of which is explained in detail below. A completed application
consists of your cover page, a personal statement, a plan of action,
two letters of recommendation, and letters of understanding. At
the time of your application, you must be a current sophomore or
junior. Applicants must be in good academic standing and must be
enrolled at The College of Wooster during the semester after the
Azimuth summer. Travel must take place in the continental U.S.
Interview
All nominees will be interviewed by the Azimuth selection committee. Interviews
will occur in February of 2009. If studying off-campus, it is your responsibility
to inform the committee of your departure date so that a phone interview
can be scheduled prior to departure.
Proposal
A proposal consists of a personal statement and a plan of action. Content
and style is up to you, but the personal statement and plan of action sections
combined should not exceed 8 double-spaced pages. Please use no less than
11-point font.
Personal Statement
In your personal statement, you should discuss how your project reflects
your unique passion: how it reflects your talents, concerns and commitments.
You should include information about what it is that prepares you to undertake
your project. This may include a description of your background, your college
years, your professional goals and aspirations, and your reasons for seeking
an Azimuth grant. The personal statement is an opportunity to provide us
with a sense of who you are, including how you would benefit from the unique
experiences the Azimuth permits.
Plan of Action
The plan of action should describe your plan for the Azimuth summer, including
a description of your proposed project and details explaining how you intend
to carry it out. It can extend and build upon experiences that you have
already had but should not take you to a location with which you are too
familiar.
Essential
to the Azimuth program is the relationship you will develop with one or
more communities during your summer. The plan must include a description
of the community(s), your interaction with them up to this point, and how
they will enhance your experience. Show us that you have considered budget,
safety, travel, visa regulations, availability of resources, hosting community(s)
and time constraints.
Accompanying Documentation
Recommendations
At least one of the two letters of recommendation should be from a College
of Wooster faculty or staff member. The other may come from an off-campus
source who knows about you and your proposed project. Letters of recommendation
should address your personal qualities as well as the suitability and feasibility
of the proposed project.
Letters of Understanding
Your proposal should include a letter from a contact person representing
each host community identified with your plan. The letter should reflect
the host community's understanding of your project, to ensure that your
plan of action is consistent with the host community's expectations. Contact
information, including an address, phone number and e-mail, if applicable,
should be included with each.
