Legal
Humanitarian Internship The Legal Humanitarian Internship takes
place during the summer with a variety of domestic humanitarian
legal aid agencies. The Internship provides funds to support student
participants. Professor Henry Kreuzman, Chair of the Pre-Law
Advising Program, and Lisa
Kastor, Director of Career Services, oversee the Legal Internship.
Faculty members from disciplines across the curriculum, including
members of the Pre-Law Advisory Committee, supervise its reflective
and academic component and serve as mentors. The Internship is designed to engage students
who are pursuing one of the professions (including law) in which
knowledge of ethical issues will be important. Iit attracts
students
from a variety
of majors, including Philosophy, Economics, History, Political
Science, International Relations, Psychology, Sociology, or Religious
Studies. By working with individuals who have committed their lives
to serve the under-served, our students become more sophisticated
in their questions about ethical service, and better understand
how their own values will affect their life's work.
This experience
enhances the students’ understanding of their life's calling
and how they can improve the quality of the lives of others. For
those students who do pursue legal-related careers after graduation,
we expect that this internship experience will help them understand
that the law involves a deep commitment to values and a desire
to help others
Internship Advisors Lisa Kastor, Director of Career Services Lisa has 19 years of experience
in assisting liberal arts students with their career journeys.
She encourages students to test out their academic and career
dreams during their college years, paying particular attention
to obtaining
hands-on experience through internships and other short-term
experiences. Through her work with the Liberal Arts Career Network
consortia,
she has developed many helpful online resources for students
interested in pursuing internships. Her advising expertise cover
the wide-ranging
areas of career development, job and internship searching, and
the graduate school application process. She serves on the Pre-Law
and Pre-Health Advising Committees. She personally advised the
two current Legal Humanitarian Aid interns through the application
process and is looking forward to helping them discern their
distinct experiences. Dr. Henry Kreuzman, Chair of the Philosophy Department,
has expertise in the philosophy of science, epistemology, logic,
and philosophy of law. He is currently conducting research on the
history of medicine and ethical issues as they arise in the law.
He has served as the Advisor for Wooster’s highly successful
pre-law and pre-health programs, is a member of the College of
Wooster’s Educational Policy Committee, and is Chair of the
Pre-Law Advising Committee. He teaches an interdisciplinary course
on ethics, literature, and the law, and has developed courses in
environmental ethics, jurisprudence, logic, and epistemology. As
Chair of Pre-Professional Advising Programs, he has invited representatives
of medical and legal humanitarian organizations to speak to students.
He is excited about the opportunities that the Legal Humanitarian
Aid Internship will provide for students to work with legal professionals
who are dedicated to serving those in need.
