Rush Policies

Committee on Social Organizations - Fall 2003

  1. Hold rush registration for students interested in participating in rush and potentially joining a club or section. Students must register for rush to be eligible to accept a bid.
  2. Rush registration would begin prior to any rush events and continue through the end of second rush events until November 14 at 4 p.m. Students would be able to register for rush at first and second rush events as well as the Lowry Center Information Desk.
  3. Information sessions sponsored by IGC/CSO would be held during orientation, during Scot Spirit Day and approximately two weeks before the beginning of rush. These sessions would provide information to potential rushees about rush, rush registration, and the Greek system at the College.
  4. Rushees would be encouraged to attend rush events of a variety of the clubs or sections. Such rush events might be combined into a block of time on the weekend. Benefits of this arrangement could be relieving pressure on rushees to limit their choices, increase rush attendance, provide more factual information to rushees upon which to filter their choices, and add to the diversity of individual club and section membership.
  5. Bids would be issued prior to Thanksgiving break and accepted after break.
  6. Rush would occur between fall and Thanksgiving break. This period would immediately precede the bid date. Under this plan, rush will begin in mid-October. The rush schedule will avoid conflicts with Forum and other significant campus events.
  7. The potential of two groups holding rushes on the same day exists. The maximum length respectively of each rush is an hour and a half, an hour and a half, and two hours. The suggested agenda for the rush events would be first rush (meet and greet), second rush (information about the group), and third rush (final questions).
  8. Ideally, the entire rush schedule, including dates, would be resolved in the spring or summer so the schedule can be announced in the fall and groups can start planning based on a known schedule.
  9. Alcohol should not be a factor in rush. All formal rush events are to be alcohol free. In addition, actives of legal age are not allowed to consume any alcohol on the day of a rush event prior to the conclusion of the event. From the start of rush through the acceptance of bids, clubs and sections may not solely sponsor all-campus parties (CSO should be notified if two or more groups plan and are approved for any all-campus party) or allow actives and rushees to gather formally around alcohol on or off campus.
  10. All formal rush events must occur on campus.
