The annual Mathematical Contest in Modeling was held earlier this semester. Dan Core '98, Anand Mehta '99 and Siddhant Kaul '00 represented Wooster. As usual the projects were both challenging and interesting. The contest poses two problems, and gives the team 3 days to come up with a mathematical model for any one of the problems. This year's problems were
1) Simulating a MRI machine
2) Coming up with a way to rank students at a college where grade inflation
was present in an extreme form.
The team chose to do the second problem, and after three late nights of pizza, came up with a model and a computer representation of the model. All three participants agreed that the experience had been "intense," but said they enjoyed it thoroughly. They now eagerly await the result of the competition. The team was ably advised by Dr. Settergren, himself a member of a team that did extremely well in the same competition 10 years ago.
