Jack Gallagher

Professor of Music

JACK GALLAGHER, Olive Williams Kettering Professor of Music, appointed 1977. where he teaches composition, orchestration, music theory, and trumpet. D.M.A. and M.F.A., Cornell University; B.A., cum laude, Hofstra Unversity. Composition with Elie Siegmeister, Robert Palmer, Burrill Phillips; seminars with Karel Husa, Thea Musgrave, Ned Rorem; master classes with Aaron Copland, George Crumb. Trumpet with Charles Gouse, Allan Dean, Edward Treutel, James Smith (coach), Carmine Caruso.

Compositions performed or recorded by the Charleston Symphony, Cleveland Chamber Symphony, Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra of Krakow, Kiev Philharmonic, Koszalin Philharmonic Orchestra, Ruse Philharmonic Orchestra (Bulgaria), Cincinnati Conservatory Wind Symphony, Gregg Smith Singers, Indiana University Wind Ensemble, Miami University (FL) Wind Ensemble, Spoleto Brass Quintet, etc., and have been included on twelve published compact discs. He holds DMA and MFA degrees in composition from Cornell University and the BA degree in Music cum laude from Hofstra University.

Exotic Dances for violin and piano nominated by editor of American Music magazine for Pulitzer Prize in music, 1997. Named Ohio Music Teachers Association "Composer of the Year" in 1996; listed in the 2003 edition of Who’s Who in America and 1998-99 International Who's Who in Music. In 1999, featured guest composer at 37th Annual Contemporary Music Festival, Sam Houston State University, Huntsville, Texas.

As producer, his production for TNC Records of Messiaen’s Oiseaux Exotiques with pianist Angelin Chang and the Cleveland Chamber Symphony conducted by John McLaughlin Williams won a 2007 Grammy Award in the classical category “Best Instrumental Soloist Performance with Orchestra.”

Music published by Editions Bim (Vuarmarens, Switzerland), Ludwig Music, Lawson-Gould, Manduca Music, The Brass Press, and The Piano Teachers' Press. Symphony in One Movement: Threnody, Berceuse, and The Persistence of Memory recorded on Vienna Modern Masters CDs; Proteus Rising from the Sea recorded by Air Force Band of Flight. Other recordings published on Musical Heritage Society, Summit, Capstone, Promuse and Pantheon International labels.

Awards, grants, fellowships, or recognition from Ohio Arts Council, Charles Ives Center for American Music, Meet the Composer, Yaddo Corporation, Virginia/College Band Directors National Association, Virginia Center for the Creative Arts and the Atlantic Center for the Arts. Performed two years as rotating section trumpet (occasional principal), the National Orchestral Association, NYC, including eight concerts at Carnegie Hall and weekly broadcasts over WNYC-FM. Listed in 2003 edition of Who's Who in America.
