The Major in Music Education

The B.Mus.Ed degree in Public School Teaching leads to licensure in the State of Ohio at the elementary and/or secondary levels. The program is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music and the Ohio Department of Education.

36.75 to 39.00 courses are required for graduation, subject to current restrictions on residency, fractional credit, transfer credit, and course load. 22 to 22.25 courses are taken in music as specified below.

Courses in Music (22.250)

  1. Music Theory: 7.5 courses
    1. Music 101, 102, 201, 202, 301, 303, 305, and 306
  2. Music History: 3 courses
    1. Music 210, 212, and 213
  3. Group Music: 1.25 courses
    1. 10 semesters in Music 150, 151, 152, 153, 154, 155, 156, 157, 160, 161, 162, 163, 164, or 165
    2. at least two semesters in Music 160 or 161
  4. Class Instruments and Voice: 2.500 courses
    1. Music 170, 171, 172, 173, 174, 175, 176, 177, and 372
  5. Performance: 4.25 courses
    1. applied music study leading to a half recital in the student's junior or senior year
    2. sufficient piano study (Music 132) to satisfy the piano proficiency requirement
  6. Music Technology: .500 course
    1. Music 280: Introduction to Music Technology
  7. Music Education: 3.500 courses
    1. 290, 370, 390, and 391
  8. Piano Proficiency Requirement by the end of the junior year
  9. Attendance at ten departmental recitals and concerts in each semester after declaring the major in music

Non-Music Courses (14-14.25)

Except where noted, individual courses may be counted toward multiple requirements. A student may not use the same course in fulfillment of both the Studies in Cultural Difference requirement and the Religious Perspectives requirement.

  1. First-Year Seminar in Critical Inquiry (1 course)
    1. to be completed in the first semester
  2. Writing Requirement (1-2 courses)
    1. Students will demonstrate basic writing proficiency in their first year through placement examination or completion of the College Writing Tutorial.
    2. Students will complete a course designated as Writing Intensive (W) in any semester between the completion of the First-Year Seminar and second semester of the junior year.
  3. Studies in Cultural Difference (1 course)
    1. Students will complete a course (C) in History or the Social Sciences that examines either a culture outside the United States or the culture of an American minority group (e.g., African American, Asian American, Hispanic or Latino American, Native American). Courses may be taught in English or in a foreign language.
  4. Religious Perspectives (1 course)
    1. Students will complete a course (R) from any department or program that examines the religious dimension of humankind in relation to issues of cultural, social, historical, or ethical significance.
  5. Quantitative Reasoning (1 course)
    1. Students will demonstrate basic quantitative proficiency through completion of a course (Q) in the Mathematicalor Natural Sciences that involves a substantial element of quantitative reasoning.
  6. Arts and Humanities (1 course)
    1. Students will complete one non-music course in the Arts or Humanities(*). [A student may not use this course in fulfillment of the Studies in Cultural Difference requirement or the Religious Perspectives requirement.]
  7. Mathematical and Natural Sciences (1 to 1.25 courses)
    1. Students will complete one to one and one-quarter courses in the Mathematical or Natural Sciences (+). [A student may not use this course in fulfillment of the Quantitative Reasoning requirement.]
  8. History and Social Sciences (1 course)
    1. Students will complete one course in History or the Social Sciences (#). [A student may not use this course in fulfillment of the Studies in Cultural Difference requirement or the Religious Perspectives requirement.]
  9. Psychology 110: Child and Adolescent Development (1 course)
    1. This course may not count toward the History and Social Sciences requirement.
  10. Education (2 courses)
    1. Education 100: Introduction to Education
    2. Education 300: Issues in Education
  11. Non-Music Elective (1 course)
  12. Independent Study (3 courses)
    1. Students will complete Education 396/397/398 (a ten-week, full-time student teaching experience in an elementary and/or secondary school setting under the supervision of a licensed teacher).
