Peter Mowrey
Associate Professor of Music, Chairperson
Peter Mowrey, composition, piano, music technology, and music theory, Chair of Music Department. Associate Professor of Music, appointed 1997.
B.Mus. (piano) and M.M. (composition), University of Georgia; D.M.
(composition), Indiana University. Prior to Wooster, taught as a
graduate assistant at the University of Georgia and served as Aural
Skills Coordinator at Indiana University.
Winner of the GMTA Collegiate Piano Competition, 1988. Keyboard performance highlights include
Franck's Symphonic Variations with the UGA Orchestra, Joan Tower's
Black Topaz (piano and chamber ensemble) on live radio, and Peter
Maxwell Davies' Missa super l'homme arme (voice, keyboards, and
chamber group) at the Spoleto festival in Charleston. Compositions
include Toccata for piano, the national runner-up in the MTNA Collegiate
Composition Contest (1990); a sextet for mixed ensemble which won
the Philip Slates Composition Contest in 1994; The Hero's Journey,
a six-movement piano piece in honor of Joseph Campbell; and many
chamber works and electronic compositions, including The Masks of
God: An Homage to Joseph Campbell, for electronics and dancers,
and The Grail, an opera for seven singers and electronic ensemble. Works have recently been performed at a number
of institutions, including the College of Wooster, the University
of Georgia, Indiana University, the Oberlin Conservatory, and Ohio
University. Author of the book Award Winning Films: A Viewer's Reference
to 2700 Acclaimed Motion Pictures (McFarland & Company, 1994).
