History of African American Music

Study of the history of African American music from 1619 through the present day. Focuses on the socio-historical context in which popular music, folk music, classical music, and religious music evolved. Topics include the spiritual, blues, gospel, jazz, rhythm and blues, contemporary music, as well as women in music. Open to non-music majors. No technical knowledge required. No prerequisite.
