Music Scholarship Auditions 2008
The College of Wooster annually offers Music Performance Scholarships
of $2000-$8000 per year, renewable for a total of $8000-$32,000
over a four-year period. These are merit-based awards to talented
prospective students selected on the basis of their music performance
skills demonstrated at the audition or on compositional skills evidenced
by written scores, and two letters of recommendation. Auditions
will be held at the College on January 30-31 and February 13-14,
2009. Recipients must meet minimum obligations in the Department
of Music but are not required to major in music.

The College of Wooster's application for admission
is the Common Application. Students may download a copy or submit

Application
Applicants for a Music Scholarship must first complete an application
for admission to the College and submit the attached Music Scholarship
Audition Form with two letters of recommendation. Letters of recommendation
should be submitted by (1) your private music teacher and (2) the
high school music director most familiar with your work or another
individual who knows your work well. An audition time will be assigned
and notification thereof mailed only after the application for admission
to the College and all music scholarship application materials have
been received.
Audition Repertory and Requirements
Music Performance applicants should present ten to fifteen minutes
of classical music (Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and/or Twentieth-Century)
or jazz in at least two contrasting styles selected from the Class
A Solo Repertoire List (or its equivalent) from your state. Selections
should be chosen to demonstrate technical facility as well as expression
and tone quality. Memorization is desirable but not required. When
possible, singers should perform in English and at least one foreign
language, preferably Italian, and may include one song from a musical.
Original music or popular music is not permitted. Music Composition
applicants should submit two representative scores. Recordings of
compositions are welcome but not required.
Music at Wooster: An Introduction
All Music Scholarship applicants are required to attend an introduction
to Music at Wooster (on Friday of the audition weekend, 5:30-9:30
p.m. in the Scheide Music Center) which will include dinner with
College of Wooster music faculty and music students, participation
in a rehearsal with a choral or instrumental ensemble, classroom
sessions with Wooster music faculty on a variety of topics, and
a short performance by Wooster music ensembles and soloists. Auditioners
may arrange overnight accommodations on campus for Friday or Saturday
evening stays through the Office of Admissions.
Eligibility
Any prospective first-year student may apply who has submitted a
completed application for admission to the College. (Transfer students
are not eligible.) Applicants who are not percussionists may audition
on only one instrument (or in voice). Percussionists must audition
on at least two contrasting instruments. Music Scholarship applicants
need not intend to major in music.
Criteria
Music Scholarships are awarded on the basis of music performance
skills demonstrated at the audition or on compositional skills evidenced
by written scores, and two letters of recommendation (see Audition
Application).
Notification
Winners will be notified in early April 2009.
Expectations of Winners
Beginning with the first semester of the first year and continuing
for as long as a Music Scholarship is held, winners must (1) enroll
in private lessons on the instrument or voice in which the Performance
Scholarship was won or in composition lessons if the scholarship
was won for composition, and (2) participate in a major performance group
or ensemble. Holders of Performance Scholarships must participate
on the instrument or voice on which the Scholarship was won.

Recorded Auditions
Recorded auditions will be considered only for international applicants.
Tapes (and all application materials) must be received by January
1, 2009.
Accompanist
If you wish your audition to be accompanied and are unable to bring
your own accompanist, the College will provide one for you upon
request. If you wish the College to provide you with an accompanist,
please indicate so on your Music Scholarship application and send
with your application published editions of your audition music
on which you indicate desired metronome speeds. Photocopies of copyrighted
music and faxes will not be accepted. If the music for the accompanist
is not received by the appropriate date specified in the audition
schedule above, the College regrets that it will be unable to provide
you with an accompanist. It is completely acceptable to audition
without an accompanist.
