These are merit-based awards to talented prospective students selected on the basis of their music performance skills demonstrated at the audition or on compositional skills evidenced by written scores, and two letters of recommendation. Auditions will be held at the College on January 30-31 and February 13-14, 2009. Recipients must meet minimum obligations in the Department of Music but are not required to major in music.

Application

Applicants for a Music Scholarship must first complete an application for admission to the College and submit the attached Music Scholarship Audition Form with two letters of recommendation. Letters of recommendation should be submitted by (1) your private music teacher and (2) the high school music director most familiar with your work or another individual who knows your work well. An audition time will be assigned and notification thereof mailed only after the application for admission to the College and all music scholarship application materials have been received.

Audition Repertory and Requirements

Music Performance applicants should present ten to fifteen minutes of classical music (Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and/or Twentieth-Century) or jazz in at least two contrasting styles selected from the Class A Solo Repertoire List (or its equivalent) from your state. Selections should be chosen to demonstrate technical facility as well as expression and tone quality. Memorization is desirable but not required. When possible, singers should perform in English and at least one foreign language, preferably Italian, and may include one song from a musical. Original music or popular music is not permitted. Music Composition applicants should submit two representative scores. Recordings of compositions are welcome but not required.

Music at Wooster: An Introduction

All Music Scholarship applicants are required to attend an introduction to Music at Wooster (on Friday of the audition weekend, 5:30-9:30 p.m. in the Scheide Music Center) which will include dinner with College of Wooster music faculty and music students, participation in a rehearsal with a choral or instrumental ensemble, classroom sessions with Wooster music faculty on a variety of topics, and a short performance by Wooster music ensembles and soloists. Auditioners may arrange overnight accommodations on campus for Friday or Saturday evening stays through the Office of Admissions.

Eligibility

Any prospective first-year student may apply who has submitted a completed application for admission to the College. (Transfer students are not eligible.) Applicants who are not percussionists may audition on only one instrument (or in voice). Percussionists must audition on at least two contrasting instruments. Music Scholarship applicants need not intend to major in music.

Criteria

Music Scholarships are awarded on the basis of music performance skills demonstrated at the audition or on compositional skills evidenced by written scores, and two letters of recommendation (see Audition Application).
