Daniel Jacobson to Discuss John Stuart Mill at Phi Sigma Tau Lecture

WOOSTER, Ohio - Daniel Jacobson, associate professor of philosophy at Bowling Green State University, will present "Utilitarianism Without Consequentialism: The Case of John Stuart Mill" on Thursday, April 27, at The College of Wooster. The lecture, which is free and open to the public, will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Room 205 of Scovel Hall (944 College Mall). A dessert reception will precede the event at 7 p.m.

An expert on moral philosophy and aesthetics, Jacobson joined the faculty at Bowling Green in 2002 when he also was appointed as a Research Fellow of the Social Philosophy and Policy Center. He received his B.A. from Yale University and his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan.

Jacobson's publications include "Sir Philip Sidney's Dilemma: On the Ethical Function of Narrative Art" in the Journal of Aesthetics and Art Criticism; "The Moralistic Fallacy: On the Appropriateness of Emotions" in Philosophy and Phenomenological Research; "Mill on Liberty, Speech, and the Free Society" in Philosophy & Public Affairs; and "J. S. Mill and the Diversity of Utilitarianism," in Philosophers' Imprint. He and Justin D'Arms are currently working on a book titled Rational Sentimentalism, which is under contract with Oxford University Press. Jacobson has held fellowships from the Mellon Foundation and the American Council of Learned Societies, and was a Laurance S. Rockefeller Visiting Fellow at the Center for Human Values at Princeton University.

Phi Sigma Tau, whose motto is "those who love wisdom, honor," is a national philosophy honorary society that serves as a means for developing and honoring academic excellence as well as philosophical interest. Wooster sponsors the Theta Chapter.
