WOOSTER, Ohio - The College of Wooster has received a $200,000 grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to support the Program in Writing. The Mellon gift will be placed in the college's endowment and its income used to cover on-going program expenses, including annual on-campus workshops, visiting speakers, books, and supplies.

The writing program was created in conjunction with a major revision of the college's curriculum adopted in 2000 and implemented between 2000 and 2005. It provides support for faculty across the disciplines to become more effective teachers and evaluators of student writing, through workshops and seminars, and helps coordinate the staffing of writing-intensive courses in all departments.

"Receiving this endowment support from the Mellon Foundation is especially gratifying because of the foundation's initial support for the curriculum revision, which led to the creation of the Program in Writing, through a major grant in 2000," said Wooster President R. Stanton Hales.

The College of Wooster is an independent liberal arts college, nationally recognized for an innovative curriculum that emphasizes independent learning. Each Wooster senior works one-on-one with a faculty mentor to create an original research project, written work, performance or art exhibit. Founded in 1866, the college enrolls approximately 1,800 students.
