College of Wooster's Archaeology Day Offers Something for EveryoneChildren encouraged to bring their parents to free interactive event on Saturday, April 19
WOOSTER, Ohio - Simulated excavation sites, flint-knapping demonstrations, and spear-throwing exercises are just a few of the many attractions scheduled for Archaeology Day on Saturday, April 19, at The College of Wooster. The annual event, which is free and open to the public, runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the College Quad (just north of Ebert Art Center). There will be a number of hands-on activities. The simulated excavation site will enable young children to sift through the dirt and find artifacts, while the demonstrations by an expert flintknapper will show how ancient Indians made stone tools. There will be an opportunity to engage in the skill of spear throwing as well. In addition, artifacts from nearby sites in Ohio and distant sites in Jordan will be on display, along with casts of fossil humans that depict the origin and evolution of our species. There will also be informational booths about the work of the Wayne County Cemetery Preservation Society and the Wayne County Historical Society. Sponsored by the Archaeology Program and the Archaeology Student Colloquium at The College of Wooster, the event is designed, in part, to draw attention to the study of archaeology. In case of rain, the alternate location will be Lowry Center (1189 Beall Ave.). Parking will be available in the lots next to Ebert Art Center (1220 Beall Ave.), Taylor Hall (308 E. University) and Freedlander Theatre (329 E. University St.). Additional information is available by phone (330-263-2474) or e-mail (pkardulias@wooster.edu). |
