Daedalus Quartet Opens Wooster Chamber Music Series
WOOSTER, Ohio - The Daedalus Quartet will open the 2007-2008 Wooster Chamber Music Series with a concert on Sunday, Oct. 7, at 3 p.m., in Gault Recital Hall of Scheide Music Center (525 E. University St.) on the campus of The College of Wooster. The program will consist of Mozart's Quartet in C, K. 465, "Dissonant;" Shostakovich's Quartet No. 3; and Sibelius' Quartet in d, "Intimate Voices." Admission is $10 for general seating and $8 for students and senior citizens. Tickets are available at the Wilson Bookstore in Lowry Center (1189 Beall Ave.) and at Maurer Pharmacy (1827 Cleveland Rd.). Founded in 2000, the Daedalus Quartet quickly established itself as one of America's outstanding string quartets by winning the Grand Prize at the Banff International String Quartet Competition in 2001. Success at the Banff competition led to engagements across North America and Japan. Carnegie Hall chose the Quartet to participate in the European Concert Hall Organization Rising Stars program during the 2004-2005 season, which led to performances in Greece, Germany, Austria, France, Belgium, and the Netherlands. The Quartet has also performed in the United States at the Library of Congress, the Houston Friends of Music, the La Jolla Music Society, the Raleigh Chamber Music Guild, the University of Washington, the University of Buffalo, New York University, and many other venues. The Quartet was appointed the Chamber Music Society Two Quartet by the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center for the 2005-2006 and 2006-2007 seasons. Columbia University appointed Daedalus as Quartet-in-Residence for the 2005-2006 and 2006-2007 seasons. Members of the Quartet were also visiting artists at the University of Pennsylvania for the 2006-2007 season. The members of the Quartet hold degrees from Juilliard, Curtis, the Cleveland Institute of Music, and Harvard University. Brother and sister violinists Kyu-Young Kim and Min-Young Kim alternate on first violin with cellist Raman Ramakrishnan and Jessica Thompson on viola. In August 2006, Daedalus released its debut album on the Bridge Records label. The album features the works of Jean Sibelius, Igor Stravinsky, and Maurice Ravel. The next Wooster Chamber Music Series performance will take place on Sunday, Nov. 4, when the American String Quartet comes to Scheide Music Center. |
