Freedom of Expression and the Case of the Holocaust Denial Subject of Bell LectureAndrew Altman to speak on Monday, April 14, at The College of Wooster
WOOSTER, Ohio - Andrew Altman, professor of philosophy at Georgia State University, will present "Freedom of Expression as a Human Right: The Case of Holocaust Denial" at the 11th Annual Bell Distinguished Lectureship in Law on Monday, April 14, at The College of Wooster. The lecture, which is free and open to the public, begins at 7:30 p.m. in Lean Lecture Room of Wishart Hall (303 E. University St.). A dessert reception will precede the event. Altman, who also serves as director of the Jean Beer Blumenfeld Center for Ethics, specializes in the philosophy of law, political philosophy, philosophy and social policy, applied ethics, and race and gender. He earned his bachelor's, master's, and Ph.D. from Columbia University, and is the author of Arguing About Law: An Introduction to Legal Philosophy (2001), and Critical Legal Studies: A Liberal Critique (1990). He has received a number of awards and honors, including The University Prize for Teaching Excellence from George Washington University, where he was a member of the faculty from 1985-2001. In addition, he serves on the Board of Editors for Social Theory and Practice, and is a member of the American Philosophical Association, the American Society for Legal and Political Philosophy, and the International Association for Philosophy of Law. The Bell Distinguished Lectureship in Law was endowed in 1999 by Jennie M. Bell and Samuel H. Bell, a 1947 College of Wooster graduate and a Federal Judge of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Ohio. The purpose is to engage students, faculty, members of the legal profession, and residents of the community in a legal issue that has broad implications for society. The Bells hope, by way of this lectureship, to bring the best minds of the legal profession to Wooster students and the local community. This lectureship also joins their long-held affection for the law and faith in the values derived from a liberal arts education. The Bell Distinguished Lectureship is sponsored by The College of Wooster's Pre-Law Program. Additional information is available by phone (330-263-2380) or e-mail (preeder@wooster.edu). |
