Guest Lecturer to Discuss Political Philosophy of Thomas HobbesAloysius P. Martinich visits The College of Wooster on Thursday, Feb. 14
WOOSTER, Ohio - Aloysius P. Martinich, professor of philosophy at the University of Texas at Austin, will present "The Political Philosophy of Thomas Hobbes and its Problems" on Thursday, Feb. 14, at The College of Wooster. The lecture, which is sponsored by Wooster's Department of Philosophy and the Ohio Theta Chapter of Phi Sigma Tau, is free and open to the public, and begins at 7:30 p.m. in Room 205 of Scovel Hall (944 College Mall). A reception will precede the lecture at 7 p.m. in the second-floor lobby of Scovel Hall. Martinich, one of the world's leading scholars on Thomas Hobbes, also teaches courses on the philosophy of religion and the philosophy of language. He received his B.A. from Windsor College and his M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of California, San Diego. He has written several books, including The Two Gods of Leviathan: Thomas Hobbes on Religion and Politics (1992), Philosophical Writing (1996), and Hobbes, a Biography (1999). In addition, he was a major contributor to the "Columbia World of Quotations" (Columbia University Press). Wooster's Department of Philosophy has been a member of Phi Sigma Tau, the national philosophy honor society, since 1983.__The criteria for student membership include four completed courses in philosophy; a B+ grade, or higher, in three of those courses; and a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or above.
